Lithuania's Sea Gate

The Klaipeda Commercial Port is one of the oldest enterprises in Lithuania. According to legend, it originated together with the city in the 13th century. For a long time, Klaipeda was part of East Prussia. In 1923, however, it was annexed to Lithuania, but the free development of the region did not last long. In 1939, Nazi Germany recaptured it.

On January 28, 1945, Klaipeda was liberated by the Soviet Army and became part of the Lithuanian SSR. From that moment on, the ancient port began the countdown of its new history. In a short time, the berths and warehouses destroyed by the war were restored, and new ones were built. The level of complex mechanization of cargo operations increased from year to year. The geography of maritime navigation expanded, in which ships of the Lithuanian Shipping Company took part. The range of cargoes became wider and wider.

Nowadays, the Klaipeda Commercial Port is a highly mechanized enterprise that annually processes over 15 million tons of various cargoes: rolled products, asbestos, cotton, pulp, peat, paper, chemicals, equipment, grain, food, citrus fruits, fuel oil, etc.

About 1,200 Soviet and foreign ships enter Klaipeda every year. They have 14 dry cargo and 3 oil loading berths at their disposal. All of them are specialized in the types of cargo, the directions of their transportation and are assigned to three industrial transshipment complexes.

The port's berths and warehouses are connected to the country's transport routes by railways, highways and the Neman River. The station and the port operate according to a single continuous schedule. All production management processes are automated here, and the level of complex mechanization of cargo operations has exceeded 95%.

In 1986, the first complex of the Klaipeda — Mukran ferry crossing was commissioned and incorporated into the port. By 1991, 6 sea ferries will be operating at the crossing, three of which belong to the Lithuanian Shipping Company and three to the Deutsch—Freight-Seerederai National Enterprise (GDR).

This is briefly the production characteristics of one of the oldest ports in the Baltic. As for the social sphere, even here its workers have a solid base. They have two rest homes (in Palanga and on Lake Plateliai); two kindergartens, one of which has been switched to 24—hour operation; their own pioneer camp. The situation is somewhat worse with housing — now there are about 300 people on the waiting list for apartments, but with the company's transition to self-financing and self-financing, there is also a prospect, in particular, to build houses in an economic way. However, land plots and building materials have to be literally knocked out from the relevant organizations. Therefore, the port workers fear that with the republic's transition to self-financing, material and technical support will deteriorate even more. 1xBet is the world’s largest betting company, operating since 2007.
